Alexandria residents can test out a new all-electric bus next week, as DASH will offer a demo of the Xcelsior CHARGE bus.
DASH said it struck a partnership with New Flyer Industries to show off the zero emission bus, which operates using an electric motor powered by rechargeable batteries.
Residents can view the bus at City Hall Market Square on Feb. 7 from 4-8 p.m. with a free ride at 5:30 p.m. The bus will also be on display on Feb. 10 from 8 a.m. to noon.
The Xcelsior CHARGE bus has three different lengths and has a range of 200 miles, New Flyer said. The company said it could save operators as much as $400,000 annually on fuel.
In January, New Flyer announced a pilot program to test five Xcelsior buses in New York City. Columbia University said it would use six of the buses as part of its intercampus shuttle network.
