Efforts to create a fully connected bike trail network in Anne Arundel County got a boost in July when the county announced plans to expand the South Shore Trail to Odenton.

The long-awaited expansion could become a reality after the county announced $9.4 million to be spent to add 14 miles to the trail as part of a multi-phase expansion.

The expansion would connect the B&A Trail to the WB&A trail, as well as the Annapolis Colonial Maritime Trail.

The current South Shore Trail runs from Annapolis Plaza to Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis. The county intends to design and build a new paved trail along the abandoned roadbed of the WB&A railroad between Annapolis and Odenton. It will connect with the Colonial Annapolis Maritime Trail on the east and WB&A trail on the west. One section from Waterbury Road to Route 3 is under construction and could be done this fall. Another section from Route 3 to Sappington Station Road is in the design phase and could be done by 2020.
