President Trump and the First Family will light the National Christmas Tree on Thursday evening. Motorists, mass-transit passengers and bicyclists should be wary of the following street closures throughout the day:

Thursday, 12-8 p.m.:

  • 17th Street, NW between Pennsylvania Ave and Constitution Ave, NW
  • C Street, NW between 17th and 18th Streets, NW
  • D Street, NW between 17th and 18th Streets, NW
  • E Street, NW between 17th and 18th Streets, NW
  • F Street, NW between 17th and 18th Streets, NW
  • G Street, NW between 17th and 18th Streets, NW
  • New York Avenue between 17th and 18th Streets, NW

Thursday, 2-8 p.m.:

  • Constitution Ave, NW between 18th Street and 14th Street, NW
  • 15th Street between H Street, NW and Madison Drive, NW (Traffic will still be allowed to flow south on 15th Street from Madison Drive)
  • 17th Street between Constitution Ave and Independence Ave, SW
  • Pennsylvania Avenue, NW between 14th Street and 15th Street, NW
  • E Street, NW between 14th Street and 15th Street, NW
  • F Street, NW between 14th Street and 15th Street, NW
  • G Street, NW between 14th Street and 15th Street, NW
  • New York Avenue, NW between 14th Street and 15th Street, NW

The National Christmas Tree will be lit every day from approximately 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. as part of the America Celebrates display at President’s Park (White House). This display is free to visit and open to the public from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. beginning Friday, Dec. 1. The walkway will be surrounding the National Christmas Tree features 56 state and territory trees decorated with handmade ornaments that are unique to each tree.

Best Metro stations are Federal Triangle (Blue, Orange and Silver Lines) and Metro Center (Red, Orange, Silver and Blue Lines).

Loudoun County bus riders can expect delays Thursday afternoon due to this event. In past years, afternoon buses have been delayed from 10 to 45 minutes.

Shirlington Christmas Tree Lighting

Arlington County’s Shirlington neighborhood will also light a Christmas Tree Thursday night at 6-8:30 p.m.

The following roads will be closed to all vehicular traffic during the event. Specific road closure times are listed next to each closure.

  • Campbell Avenue, from the Harris Teeter driveway to S. Randolph Street (12-4 p.m.)
  • Campbell Avenue, from Arlington Mill Drive to S. Quincy Street (4-10 p.m.)
  • S. Randolph Street, from Arlington Mill Drive to the alley behind Charlie Chiangs Restaurant, roughly the 3000 block (4-10 p.m.)

Vehicles will be allowed to exit the covered Harris Teeter parking structure onto Campbell Ave. until 4 p.m., then must use the alternative entrance accessed from Arlington Mill Drive. Motorists should expect congestion in the area and plan ahead for detours, or alternate commuting methods such as buses or bicycling.
