St. Patrick’s Day events will continue through this weekend, bringing plenty of opportunities for merriment but also potentially impacting your travel.

There are a number of big events related to the Irish holiday, many of which will bring crowds in the thousands. In addition, drivers should expect sizable crowds near any popular bar or tavern in the region.

Big events to look out for include:

Lucky Leprechaun 5K Race - Saturday, 8 am. Reston Town Center. Look for about 2,000 runners during the race, followed by some St. Patrick’s Day festivities.

2018 Shamrock Fest - Saturday, noon-8 pm. RFK Stadium. More than 20,000 people are expected for this collection of rock bands.

2018 Shamrock Crawl - Saturday, 2-10 pm. Dupont Circle. Lots of beer drinkers will be making frequent stops along the DuPont Circle bar circuit all afternoon and evening.

Alexandria St. Patrick’s Day Parade - Sunday, 1:30 p.m. The parade will start at the intersection of King and St. Asaph Street, then proceed down King Street to Lee Street, then continuing west on Cameron Street to Royal Street.

These festivities will coincide with opening events related to the National Cherry Blossom Festival, and blossoms are expected to be near peak bloom. So plan ahead to account for heavy congestion in the District, particularly near the Tidal Basin.

Of course, the details on St. Patrick’s Day festivities also come with the usual warning to drink responsibly and avoid drinking and driving. The Washington Region Alcohol Program is partnering with ridesharing service Lyft to offer free rides home on St. Patrick’s Day. To get a code for a free ride home, go to The code is valid from 4 p.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Sunday.
