Commuters woke up Tuesday with a double-whammy of challenges, as icy road conditions mixed with a dense layer of fog.
Visibility was down to less than a quarter mile in many areas, and many offices and schools were operating on a two-hour delay or had liberal leave policies in place. Stafford County and Spotsylvania County schools closed for the day.
The National Weather service had a dense fog alert in place until 8 a.m.
“If you can’t delay your trip, please take things very slow and assume that everything that looks wet is icy,” the Virginia Department of Transportation said on its Twitter feed.
Water main breaks made things even more difficult in some locations. At Reagan National Airport, a main ramp off the George Washington Parkway was closed due to a water main break. Another water main break shut down Annandale Road in both directions near Statecrest Drive, WUSA 9 reported. For more information on road conditions in Virginia, go to 511Virginia.org. Fortunately, temperatures are expected to rise well above freezing today, allowing ice to thaw later.
