Drivers heading north on I-95 in the direction of Fredericksburg late Tuesday and Wednesday may want to change their travel plans.

The Virginia Department of Transportation said that the road will close for periods of as long as 30 minutes between midnight and 5 a.m., as crews install beams for a new overpass at Exit 118, near Thornburg.

Individual lane closures could start as soon as 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, with double lane closures starting at 10 a.m.

During the closures, drivers will be routed to the I-95 northbound exit ramp at Exit 118 and sent across Mudd Tavern Road, then back onto I-95 northbound.

Meanwhile, Mudd Tavern Road will be reduced to one lane from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Drivers can also expect single lane closures on I-95 during the day.

The disruption is part of a $22.4 million project to build a four-lane overpass on Mudd Tavern Road spanning I-95.
