Drivers in Montgomery County should be aware of a new configuration of Georgia Avenue (MD 97) near Randolph Road in Silver Spring beginning this weekend.

The Maryland State Highway Administration warned of a “major” traffic shift at the intersection caused by a $40 million reconstruction project in the area.

The traffic shift will start Saturday at 6 a.m. and be fully in place by 7 p.m. The SHA said it does not expect any lane closures.

Here’s what motorists can expect:

  • If you are on eastbound Randolph Road, you can access the two far left lanes through a new tunnel underneath Georgia Avenue. This will make it easier to get to the Glenmont Shopping Plaza via the far left lane.
  • If you want to get onto Georgia Avenue from eastbound Randolph Road, bear right at the split and then make either a left turn onto northbound Georgia Avenue, or a right turn to go southbound.
  • Drivers traveling through the intersection will only be allowed to make a right turn at the next intersection at Randolph Road and Glenmont Circle.
