Organizers of a rally to support gun control have landed a location for the March 24 event.
After it was unable to secure a permit for the National Mall, the March for Our Lives will instead take place on Pennsylvania Avenue between 3rd and 12th Streets.
Tens of thousands of people are expected for the rally, which is organized by students who survived the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.
Organizers are urging attendees to buy Metro SmarTrip cards in advance. Metro encouraged the purchase of $10 cards that allow for unlimited trips on the day. The deadline to order in time for the event is March 9.
The March for Our Lives organizers had initially applied for a permit on the National Mall, where most sizable rallies in the District are held. But another group had previously applied to use the space. Organizers had been working with the National Park Service on an alternate site before agreeing with the District of Columbia government on the use of Pennsylvania Ave.
Specific details on speakers and the timing of the rally have not yet been announced.
If taking Metro to the march, riders can get off at Union Station and walk to 3rd Street in front of the Capitol. Capitol South, Federal Triangle, and L’Enfant Plaza stops are also in the vicinity.
Ridesharing service Lyft announced that it would give free rides to anyone attending the rally, and Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh said the city would send 60 free buses to send students to Washington, D.C.
In addition to the march in Washington, there are similar rallies scheduled at nearly 500 of other locations around the world on March 24.
