A year after the SafeTrack maintenance surge forced a break to the tradition, Metro will open early for the 42nd Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) on Oct. 22, allowing tens of thousands of participants and spectators to use the transit system to get to the start points in Rosslyn and downtown Washington.
Metrorail will open at 6 a.m.—nearly two hours before the 7:55 a.m. start times for both the marathon, which begins on Virginia Route 110 between Arlington National Cemetery and the Pentagon, and the 10K, which begins on the National Mall at 12th Street and Madison Drive. The wheeled start time is 7:45 a.m.
During last year’s MCM, organizers were forced to adjust the event schedule and race courses in order to facilitate runners arriving to the start lines on time due to Metro holding true to its promise not to disrupt SafeTrack maintenance and maintaining its usual 7 a.m. Sunday Metrorail opening time.
This year, MCM weekend festivities on Oct. 20-22 will be headquartered at Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor.
