Metro said it will expand the hours it charges people to park and add a charge for Saturday parking under a new pilot program beginning next month.

Metro said that beginning Feb. 5, it will begin charging anyone who leaves a Metro parking lot after 7:30 a.m. Currently, you can avoid parking charges if you exit a lot before 9:30 a.m.

In addition, Metro will begin charging $2 to park on Saturdays after 10 a.m. This fee kicks in on Feb. 10.

Metro also announced it will reduce the parking fee at Landover and West Falls Church to $3, as a way of testing whether lower parking fees will boost demand at underutilized garages.

There are 14 Metro lots that will charge more to park for those who don’t ride the Metro. If you park your car but don’t record a trip on Metro, you will be charged between $8.70 and $10 at the following stations:

Green Line: Branch Ave, Greenbelt, Suitland

Yellow Line: Huntington

Orange Line: Dunn Loring, Minnesota Ave, New Carrollton

Blue Line: Franconia-Springfield, Largo Town Center

Red Line: Rhode Island Ave, Rockville, Twinbrook, White Flint

The new pilot program will run through July.
