Virginia residents traveling west from the Washington area into West Virginia may encounter severe delays along I-81 over the next few days.

Emergency bridge work in West Virginia has forced the closure of the right lane of I-81 northbound through Wednesday, April 4. The closure is located about three miles north of the Virginia/West Virginia border.

The Virginia Department of Transportation said the lane closure was already causing a four-mile backup into Frederick County, Virginia on Thursday afternoon. There may also be spillover congestion onto Route 11 near Winchester.

If you are heading out that way over the next week, consider these alternatives:

  • I-66 or Route 7 to Route 340 northbound
  • Exit 310 in I-81 to Route 37 to Rute 522 northbound
