AT&T mobile phone users trying to call 911 were unable to reach operators nationwide for several hours Wednesday, forcing municipalities to publish alternate phone numbers to report emergencies.

AT&T customers in the D.C. area whose service has been disrupted and who require emergency service should either use a different carrier or dial the following alternate phone numbers:

- D.C.: 202-373-3700, ext 1

- Alexandria, Va.: 703-746-4444 or text 911

- Fairfax County: 703-691-2233

- Montgomery County: 301-279-8000

No major issues have been reported in Fairfax County and Montgomery County, but 911 outages have been reported in D.C. and Alexandria.

AT&T issued the following tweet as the outage continued through Wednesday night: “Aware of issue affecting some calls to 911 for wireless customers. Working to resolve ASAP. We apologize to those affected.”
