A Fairfax County police officer was hurt Thursday morning after being struck by a hit-and-run motorist while directing traffic on Virginia Route 28 near I-66.
Fairfax County Police said the officer was on the scene of an accident involving an overturned dump truck at about 4:15 a.m. Thursday. Police said the dump truck and box truck collided, and the dump truck fell over onto a sedan.
The accident caused power lines to fall onto the road and stoplights in the area to go out. Police responded to help direct traffic in the area. That’s when one officer was struck by a car. The officer was transported to a hospital and sustained non-life threatening injuries.
The incidents caused the Route 28 to close in both directions. Northbound lanes opened at about 5:30 a.m. and southbound lanes opened at 6:30 a.m.
Camera crews were on the scene of the first incident and may have captured footage of the second, police said. Police were actively seeking footage to identify the vehicle that struck the officer.
No other people were seriously hurt in any of the incidents. Anyone with information in the incidents is asked to call 703-280-0543.
