DC has kicked off its annual “Potholepalooza” extravaganza, with crews filling and smoothing over damaged roads, alleys and sidewalks. Commuters should expect a bit of short-term pain in the coming months in exchange for the long-term health of their automobiles and bicycles.
A Quarter of District Roads in Poor Condition
The District Department of Transportation has determined that 25% of DC roads are assessed to be in poor condition, giving workers plenty of work to do during the pothole-filling season, which traditionally begins in the spring and ends in the fall. To identify potential projects, DDOT uses data from winter road assessments and community feedback to identify candidate projects. DDOT officials visually inspect all potential project sites before earmarking them for future work.
DDOT will place notices and any necessary no parking signs on affected streets 72 hours prior to the start of the street resurfacing work. This notice will contain information about when the roadwork will occur. In order to ensure that rehabilitation and maintenance can remain on schedule, the flyers request that owners move their cars prior to resurfacing. Motorists risk having their vehicles towed away if they don’t move them in time.

DDOT has a real-time map that details the location, work being performed and status of each road-rehabilitation project. As of Monday evening, DDOT crews were working on 28 sites out of a total of 297 identified projects.

The public can request pothole repair services by calling the Mayor’s Citywide Call Center at 311 or by completing a service request online using the District government’s Service Request Center. Indicate the pothole location (e.g., address and/or intersection) and describe the severity of the problem (depth, width and number of potholes in one location). A service request will be put into the tracking system and requestors will receive a service request number.
