Drivers can expect single lane closures during the day along Rockville Pike starting next week, as work begins on intersection improvements near the Medical Center Metro station.

Lane closures are scheduled to begin on Monday, March 5, and extend through April 18. There will also be lane closures on Woodmont Avenue during a part of this period. All lane closures will last from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation is upgrading intersections at Rockville Pike, Jones Bridge Road and Center Drive (near the National Institutes of Health) and at Rockville Pike and Woodmont Avenue.

The Crossing Project at the Medical Center Metro station involves the construction of a pedestrian underpass connecting NIH and the transit center on the west side of Rockville Pike with the Walter Reed National Military Medical center on the east side. The project is expected to be complete by 2021.

The schedule of lane closures is as follows:

  • March 5-9, 12-15: Rockville Pike between Chestnut Street & Woodmont Avenue. The southbound and northbound left lanes will be closed.

  • March 15, 19-21: Rockville Pike between South Drive and Woodmont Avenue. The southbound and northbound left lanes will be closed.

  • March 22-23: Rockville Pike between South Drive and Woodmont Avenue. The southbound and northbound left lanes will be closed.

  • March 26-30; April 2-6, 9-13, 16-18: Woodmont Avenue between Rockville Pike and Battery Lane, and Rockville Pike between South Chelsea Lane and Center Drive. The southbound and northbound left lanes, and southbound right turn from Rockville Pike onto Woodmont Avenue will be closed.
