Route 1 traffic in Woodbridge will shift to new pavement beginning Friday, as part of an effort to widen the road over the next year.
The shift will begin 10 a.m. Friday with northbound traffic between Mount Pleasant Drive and Dawson Beach Road. Then on Monday, southbound traffic will shift between Occoquan Road and Mary’s Way.
The shift comes as part of the Route 1 widening project, which will expand the road from four lanes to six by 2019. The $168 million project also calls for new medians and turn lanes, a six-foot sidewalk, and a 10-foot shared use path.
The road widening will allow this part of Route 1 to accommodate more than double its current traffic load of 35,000 cars per day. The Virginia Department of Transportation projected that 75,000 cars will use Route 1 daily by 2036.
