Severe thunderstorms, a Beltway tractor-trailer fire and an accident in Rosslyn marred the Friday afternoon commute, snarling traffic and spilling vehicles into surrounding surface streets.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for much of the D.C. metro area through 9 p.m. Storms were expected to bring intense rain and wind gusts throughout the area. Motorists should use caution, keeping ample space between vehicles on the road and ensuring their headlights are on to enhance visibility.

On the roads, a tractor-trailer fire on the Interstate 66 eastbound offramp to the I-495 was expected to shut down the connector for an extended period of time.

Inside the Rosslyn tunnel on I-66 westbound, an accident has forced cars to detour onto nearby Lee Highway.
