After last week’s shooting of the GOP Congressional Baseball Team practice, the Capitol and Metropolitan Police will establish a three-block security cordon for the Congressional Women’s Softball game on Wednesday.
The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at Watkins Recreational Center Softball Field on Capitol Hill, but authorities will close the following streets starting at approximately 4:00 pm until relieved:
- D Street, SE from 11th to 14th Street, SE—1100, 1200, and 1300 blocks
- E Street, SE from 11th to 14th Street, SE—1100, 1200, and 1300 blocks
- 12th Street, SE from D to E Streets, SE—400 block
- 13th Street, SE from D to E Streets, SE—400 block
Local residents will be allowed through the cordon after producing their ID, according to the MPD.
Last Thursday, an Illinois man opened fire on the GOP Congressional Baseball Team practice in the Del Rey neighborhood of Alexandria, seriously wounding House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-LA, two Capitol Police officers and two others. Scalise remains hospitalized in serious condition.
The game, which is a fundraiser for young women’s breast-cancer awareness, will pit Congresswomen against women members of the Congressional Press Corps.
Best Metrorail stations to get to Watkins Recreation Center are Eastern Market or Potomac Avenue (Blue, Orange or Silver Lines).
